Derek has a broad experience in residential, commercial and agricultural property matters, including the varied challenges of business purchase agreements. His background however is in inheritance tax mitigation and estate administration. His father had his own solicitors practice on the Fylde coast and this is where Derek started his career but the appeal of working in beautiful Dorset was sufficient to tempt him away.

Derek qualified as a solicitor on 15 June 1979 and joined Rutters later that year.

For relaxation he enjoys nothing more than lighting up the barbecue for family and friends and following the fortunes of Blackpool F C

James likes nothing more than to wrestle with a difficult civil litigation problem whether this is a contractual claim, employment issue or even a commercial dispute.

He has a wealth of experience in Landlord & Tenant matters, debt recovery and property disputes.

He has built up a justified reputation for being the person to turn to when the diplomatic approach fails.

He is also experienced in Family law with particular emphasis on the financial issues arising out of separation and divorce together with co-ownership and cohabitee disputes.

Duncan is a Private Client Solicitor specialising in Wills, Probate, Trusts, Tax, Powers of Attorney and Elderly Client matters. Duncan has worked in the legal profession for nearly ten years for several firms in the South of England and after a stint working on the south coast he joined Rutters in 2013 returning to work in Shaftesbury where he grew up. Duncan has a good knowledge of the area and the community and is well placed to offer comprehensive advice on all private client matters.

Outside of work Duncan is a keen sportsman playing cricket and golf whenever time allows. He lives with his wife Sophie and two young children.

Claire studied Business Law at Bournemouth University and then completed the Legal Practice Course in Bristol and qualified as a Solicitor with Rutters in March 2008. Claire specialises in Residential and Commercial property transactions. Claire is based at our Gillingham office and has good local knowledge and working relationships with many of the local Estate Agents and has a loyal client following. Outside of work, Claire enjoys keeping fit, cinema, travel and spending time with friends and family. Claire qualified as a Solicitor on 17 March 2008.

Matthew is based in the Private Client Department, where he is enjoying the challenge of developing a wide knowledge of all aspects of Private Client work.

He studied English Literature at Kent University, before completing the Graduate Diploma in Law at Nottingham Law School and subsequently achieved a Distinction in the Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at Bournemouth University.

Outside of work, he enjoys playing squash and represented Penn State University in America, badminton and running. In particular, he is an accomplished violinist and performs with various amateur orchestras throughout Dorset.

Catharine brings a wonderful down to earth approach to the stresses and strains of property transactions whether these are residential, commercial or agricultural. She also is very experienced in some of the less glamorous areas such as shared ownership purchases.

Catharine qualified as a Solicitor in 2003 and joined Rutters in 2005.

Catharine’s spare time is occupied by looking after her young family and training for a half marathon.

Charlotte qualified as a solicitor in 2010 while working for a high street firm across the border in Somerset. Since then Charlotte has gained experience both in residential conveyancing and a range of commercial transactions including commercial property. Prior to joining Rutters in 2016 Charlotte worked in-house at a local brewery offering advice on a range of legal issues to the brewing company.

In her spare time Charlotte enjoys cycling, completing a number of charity cycles each year, running and swimming. Charlotte also keep busy helping out with running a local Brownie unit.

Genette qualified as a solicitor in 2007 and has a wealth of experience in Family law matters to include divorce/dissolution proceedings, dividing finances after a separation/divorce, resolving the arrangements for children after a separation, pre-nuptial agreements, cohabitation agreements and domestic violence injunctions.

She will support you without bamboozling you with legal jargon. She is familiar with dealing with divorces/dissolutions involving people who have public sector pensions (Teachers’ Pensions, Armed Forces Pension Schemes, Local Government Pension Schemes). She is also Collaborative Family Lawyer helping people reach an agreement in an amicable way.

Outside of the office Genette enjoys keeping fit by running and taking in the countryside sights as well as knocking down skittles playing for a village team.

Kate qualified as a Paralegal specialising in Commercial Property in December 2013 while working for a large law firm in Wiltshire and is now a Fellow of the Institute of Paralegals. Kate has experience in sales and purchases of both commercial and residential properties, adverse possession claims, in-specie transfers, mortgages, lease renewals and extensions. Kate joined Rutters in July 2015.

Outside of work, Kate enjoys spending time with her young family, baking, swimming, travelling, walking her dog and going to the theatre and cinema.
