Probate Registry fees set to rise

Probate Fees set to riseCurrently, the Probate Registry charge a flat rate fee to process an application for a grant of probate or a grant of letters of administration. A flat fee of £215 is charged on estates worth more than £5,000. Although, if the application is made by a solicitor the fee is less, being £155.

A new law proposes to introduce a sliding scale fee which will be based on the value of the estate. It is anticipated the new sliding scale fee will start in April 2019, subject to the change to the law being approved by the House of Commons.

The fees will slide from zero for estates worth less than £50,000, up to £6,000 for estates worth £2 million or more.

this does mean a saving for lower value estates worth less than £50,000 but a huge hike in fees for estates worth more.

The table below sets out the proposed fees.
